Styles of Trellis Roofing for a Gazebo

If you're looking for a little privacy in your backyard but don't want to lose that light summer breeze you love, a gazebo with a trellis roof may be just the thing. According to This Old House magazine, a gazebo generally has a closed roof. However, the definition is changing, and the term gazebo can refer to a variety of partially enclosed structures.

Perhaps the most common of trellis style roofs, the lattice features a crisscross design that creates squares or diamonds overhead. Typically made from wood, lattices can also be made from vinyl slats and can cover both large and small areas. To give yourself more privacy, place the boards on your trellis closer together to create smaller squares, or add one or more trellises on the side of your gazebo. For a designer's touch, set the boards in a pattern to make both small and large squares in the same piece of trellis.

If your gazebo is small or simple is your style, slats, or rafters, may be all you need to support vines on the roof. Constructed from basic pieces of board, such as 2-by-4s, slats typically run horizontally across the roof similar to a pergola.

If a rustic secret garden look is what you're seeking, use pieces of branches, twigs and vines to construct your gazebo roof. While vines, branches and twigs are still green, wrap them together in sections to create a trellis effect, or purchase pieces of ready-made rustic trellis from a home improvement store. Place rafters at sufficient intervals to support your roof, then attach the trellis to them.

If you're looking for something romantic or you want a trellis roof that won't rot, a decorative metal trellis roof may be what you want. Made from copper, iron or other metal, decorative metal trellises can be ordered from a manufacturer to your specifications or purchased ready-made from a home improvement store, depending on the size of your roof. Rafters under the metal and trim on top are often used to hold a decorative metal trellis roof in place. As you design your roof, be sure to take the weight of the metal into consideration.
