Vinyl fencing--also known as polyvinyl chloride or PVC fencing--is very durable, versatile, easy to maintain, and it comes with a lifetime warranty from most suppliers. Vinyl fencing won't rot over time or need repainting--just washing it off with a water hose and mild detergent will make it look like new year after year. Some of the tools used for vinyl fencing are specialized--others are general-use tools, which are nevertheless necessary.
Rail Notcher
A vinyl fence picket and rail notcher is a hand-held pliers-type tool used to make the raised tabs, or notches, in vinyl rails and picket ends that help to prevent pull-out.
Circular Saw
The circular saw is a typical carpenter's electric saw used to cut vinyl fencing components, but with a specialized vinyl-cutting saw blade. This is a 7 1/4-inch blade with fine teeth, that allows the cutting of vinyl fencing, siding and trim without catching the vinyl edges and causing them to chip or crack.
Post Nibblers
The vinyl fence post nibbler is a hand-held tool used to remove the 1/4-inch slugs from the vinyl fence post. This makes it possible to angle vinyl rails as needed to follow changes in uneven terrain features.
String and reel
The string and reel is a simple high-visibility string that is wound around a reel--used to mark a straight section of fencing. The string is attatched to posts at the start and end of a section of fencing. This allows the remaining posts to be placed between the two end posts in a straight line. The string usually is between 200 and 500 feet in length.
Post-Hole Digger
A post-hole digger is a hand-held gardening tool which is used to dig narrow holes in the earth for posts to be placed in with gravel and concrete. The hole is normally dug to a depth of 24 inches. There are also gas-powered post-hole diggers available at your local rental store that make this process much easier.
Carpenter's Level
The carpenters level is used to make sure that the posts are level and plumb.
