Building a gazebo-style birdhouse does not necessarily require a person to be able to handle a hammer and nails. In fact, lovely birdhouses can be created using items that can be found around the house. These birdhouses are not only inexpensive, but they are also fun to create for adults and children both.
Instructions
- 1
Leaving at least 1 inch around the sides of the milk carton, use the scissors to cut vertical rectangles on each side of the carton.
2Poke a small hole in the top of the birdhouse and run a string into it from the hole in the inside of the house. Be sure to tie a knot at the bottom of the string that is larger than the hole the string is going through. The length of the string should be about 24 to 30 inches.
3Using the scissors and construction paper, cut out flowers, clouds and butterflies to add some attractive spring colors to the exterior of the gazebo-style birdhouse. About five to six of each of the cutouts should be more than enough.
4Cut off the top of the milk carton about an inch down. After the top has been cut off, rotate it 90 degrees. This will create a roof to the gazebo style birdhouse that overhangs over the sides of the birdhouse. Place glue at the top of the sides of the carton so the roof will stay in place after it is put on top.
5Cut two pieces of construction paper like checkerboards. They will become the lattices. This means that several, small, alternating squares should be cut from the paper. Cut four long pieces of green paper that will move in and out of the holes in the lattices. These will be the vines. The vines should be cut to move in a back-and-forth motion--not a straight line. Glue these two pieces of paper to opposite sides of the milk carton. The sides of the papers should slightly wrap around the corners.
6Glue the flowers, clouds, butterflies and other items that are to be placed on the carton. Spread them out so that each side includes decorations.
7Tie the birdhouse to a tree limb or other item outside. Remember to put birdseed inside. Sit back and watch birds enjoy the birdhouse.
