How to Put a Floor in a Gazebo

A gazebo can be a beautiful addition to any landscape, creating a covered surface from which you can enjoy the outdoors year-round. To help ensure that enjoyment, though, you need the gazebo to be sturdy enough to withstand the elements, and that begins with a strong, long-lasting floor. While there are a number of shapes and sizes for a gazebo floor, depending on the precise look of the gazebo you desire, most gazebo floors follow the same basic building plans. They consist of framed and pinned joists covered by deck planks.

Instructions

    1

Mark cutting lines on four 2-by-4 planks using a tape measure and a pencil. Make two planks 95 inches long and two others 93 inches long. Mark three 4-by-4 pressure-treated planks with a line at 93 inches in length. Use a skill saw to cut the planks at the marked lines.

    2

Remove the groundcover from a 8-square-foot area where you wish to build your gazebo. Use a spade to cut through the grass cover and to dig a 2-inch-deep hole for the foundation in the area. Slope the hole away from any structures with a slope measuring 1/8-inch for every foot in length. Compress the soil at the base of the foundation with a tamper.

    3

Fill the foundation hole with gravel, and compress the gravel down with the tamper until the gravel is at surface level. Run a wooden screed across the top of the gravel to level it. Use a carpenter's level to make certain that the gravel is level.

    4

Drill three 1/2-inch holes through each of the 4-by-4 beams with the electric drill. Make one hole in the center of each beam and one hole about 2 inches from each end. Lay the beams on the foundation. Place two on the end of the foundation, creating a length of 95 inches from center, and center one beam between the end pieces. Secure the beams in place. Use a hammer to drive 1/2-inch rebar through the drilled holes in the beams and into the gravel and soil beneath.

    5

Place the 95-inch-long 2-by-4 planks against the sides of the beams. Position the planks so that the 2-inch sides are against the ground and the 4-inch widths are even with the top of the 4-by-4 beams. The ends of the 2-by-4 planks must be flush with the ends of the beams, creating a 4-inch high frame on all sides. Nail the planks to the beams using three staggered 16d nails at each joint.

    6

Take the last two 2-by-4 planks, and place them on the 2-inch edge of the planks. Center these 93-inch 2-by-4 planks between the two longer 2-by-4 planks and between every two beams. Nail the planks in place using two 16d nails.

    7

Cut deck planks in the wood of your choice to 95 inch lengths using the skill saw. Place the planks across the 2-by-4 and 4-by-4 joists, and nail into place with deck nails driven through the planks and into the joists below.
