Outside Wedding Ceremony Decorating Ideas

Having your ceremony outdoors can be a lovely way to hold a wedding. Depending on the setting of the event, you may need very little or substantial decorations to create the atmosphere you want. If your ceremony is being held at a venue, discuss with the coordinator what will be provided and if there are any restrictions on what you can add.

A gazebo in a garden, yard or park is a natural setting for a ceremony.

An arch in front of which the bride and groom stand for the ceremony is a classic decoration for an outdoor wedding. Another option is a trellis with straight lines instead of curves. Some locations feature gazebos, a perfect place to host the exchange of vows.

A vine-covered trellis adds to the romance.

Whether you are adding a structure, using one that is already there, or are simply allowing nature to be your backdrop, well-placed floral arrangements enhance the beauty of your setting. Weaving flowers through a wire arch not only hides the imperfections but adds to its attractiveness. Drape flowering vines through the top of a trellis. For permanent structures, including gazebos, tall plants or flower arrangements make a nice accent. Bouquets in vases can be displayed on pedestals and placed on either side of the structure and throughout the bridal party area. Flowers matching those of the bridal party also make a nice marker for the rows reserved for family.

Tulle and organza create a flowing visual on arches, trellises and gazebos. Consider hanging long strips of silk or satin from the rear of the arch for another dynamic effect. Cover the guest seating in slip covers with sashes that match the material used at the front. Ribbon makes a nice accent on gazebos and standing floral arrangements, as wells as a classic marker of reserved rows.

Use tiki torches at an evening beach-themed wedding.

For a late afternoon or evening wedding, lights not only provide soft illumination but also create a romantic atmosphere. Strings of lights can be wound around an arch, trellis or gazebo. Place them in the trees surrounding the ceremony location. Hang paper lanterns from the trees as well. If your ceremony takes place on a flat surface, use candles in tall holders for an even more romantic effect. Place battery-operated candles in white paper bags with rocks or sand for ballast on either side of your aisle at each row of seats. If you are marrying on the beach or have a tropical theme to your wedding, light tiki torches all around.

Palms and tropical flowers will enhance the setting.

If you're marrying on the beach, use shells and starfish to accent the arch or fabric. For a fall wedding, wrap the arch or trellis with branches, grapevines and autumn leaves. Use palms tree fronds to accent your tropical-themed wedding. If you have weather that permits an outdoor winter wedding, accent the location with pine cones and snowflakes.
