Lattice work panels can provide privacy around a backyard deck. Depending on the existing structure of your deck, installing lattice work may be as simple as nailing the panels to the deck's posts. If you're building a deck from scratch, install posts that are the height you want the lattice work privacy screen to be. Either way, lattice work comes in a variety of styles, from the traditional diamond pattern to crisscross grids or purely horizontal members.
Instructions
Install Vertical Supports
- 1
Install 2-by-4 inch vertical posts approximately 4 to 6 inches taller than the desired height of your privacy lattice work and 4 feet apart to take advantage of stock lattice panels, which are 4 feet wide.
2Attach the 2-by-4 inch lattice posts to the existing posts on the railing of your deck. Lay the post flat against the existing post on the outside of the deck. Secure it to the existing post with five lag screws, evenly spaced along the height of the existing deck post.
3Attach 6-by-6 inch lattice work upright vertical posts to the perimeter of the floor of your deck if there is no existing railing around your deck. Because it is only attached at the bottom, this option will only support a lattice work privacy screen about 4 feet high. The cap molding will add horizontal support to the privacy screen.
4Dig 2-foot-deep holes around the perimeter of the deck with a post-hole digger and set the supporting posts into the holes using quick-set concrete, for a more substantial privacy wall. Ensure that the posts are perfectly straight upright by laying a carpenter's level against the side of the post and holding it until the concrete begins to set.
Install Lattice Work Panels
- 5
Nail the sides of the lattice work panels to the vertical posts. Line up the bottom of the lattice work with the base of the deck or the ground, depending on your preference. Secure the lattice work panel with at least five nails: one each at the top, bottom and middle of the vertical post, with the other two nails placed one between each end and the middle.
6Cut lengths of lattice cap molding to finish off the raw edge of the top of the lattice. Use a miter box to cut 45-degree angles for the corners of the deck and to ensure a straight cut where two sections of lattice cap molding butt up against each other.
7Place the lattice cap molding over the top of the lattice work panel, fitting the top of the lattice work into the channel cut into the underside of the lattice cap molding. Secure each piece of molding using several staples from a heavy duty staple gun.
