How to Anchor a Patio Cover to Cement

Written By Unknown on Senin, 11 November 2013 | 17.09

Cement, more appropriately known as concrete, is a masonry surface. After hardening, concrete forms a one-piece, permanent, solid surface. A patio cover keeps sun and rain off your family and guests while entertaining on your concrete patio. Winds can cause patio covers to lift and move out of place, making anchoring necessary. Unsecured patio covers can cause property damage and physical harm. Securing a patio cover helps prevent a potential hazard.

Instructions

    1

Measure and mark the concrete surface reflecting the placement of the base patio cover poles, using a tape measure and pencil.

    2

Drill a hole over the measurement markings with a carbide-core bit installed on a hammer drill. Position the hammer drill over the marking and bore into the concrete. Remove the drill bit from the hole. Clear away dust and debris from inside the hole with a small whisk broom. Check the anchor manufacturer's recommended circumference and depth for the hole. Typical hole sizes range from 1/2 inch to 3/4 inch, depending on the anchor size.

    3

Chip away unevenness at the base of the hole with a masonry cold chisel and hammer. Make the base fairly even; perfect leveling is not required. Sweep out any dust or debris.

    4

Insert an expandable anchor into the hole. Expandable anchors come in a variety of size. Generally, a 1/2-inch anchor is suitable to hold down a patio cover.

    5

Position the leg of the patio cover over the expandable anchor. Thread a 3/8-by-1-inch hex-head bolt through the base of the leg and into the anchor. Tighten the bolt with a box wrench or open-end wrench. Inserting the bolt into the anchor will cause the anchor to mushroom and expand to the edges of the hole, creating a tight and secure fit.
