Low Voltage Landscape Lighting Design Ideas

A truly gorgeous backyard is enjoyable any time of the day or night with the installation of some low voltage lighting. Lighting is often as decorative as it is useful, and, with some careful planning and a little creativity, light placement can transform a garden by night.

Illuminate major focal points of the garden, and they may become creepy at night.

Many gardens have a distinct central feature, and during the day there's no doubt about the focal point of the garden. The same should be true of the night. Focus some low voltage lights on whatever creation is the central point of the garden. For fountains and ponds, underwater lighting will illuminate not only the decorative aspects of the water feature's surroundings, but also the fish, turtles and other aquatic creatures. For arbors or gazebos, hide lights in surrounding foliage or inside the structure itself. Likewise, to highlight a stone statue, birdbath or retaining wall, place lights strategically in trees or shrubs to create a mysterious appearance.

With the help of some lights, use a gazebo or other outside shelter into the hours of the morning.

Use strings of lights to highlight and outline walkways, stairs, benches and the edges of patios and decks. The beauty of decorating with lighting whose sole purpose is for you to see it during the night is that you don't have to make it overwhelmingly bright; guests don't need to read by the light, and even the softest of lights are easily seen in the dark night. To line walkways, choose garden lamps with a light source that you can aim down the path; the goal is to cover the whole path with the same strength of lighting, so place the lamps appropriately. For edging benches or gazebos, the lights don't even need to be visible. Tuck strings of waterproof and weatherproof lights under the edge of a bench or along the eaves of the gazebo.

Colored lights can add some flavor to a nighttime garden, but adding too many colors or adding colors that are too strong can make even the most elegant garden look like Las Vegas at night. Select one soft, muted color; natural colors accent the surroundings best. Use soft greens or blues in moderation, especially to highlight central focal points in the landscape.

Uplighting can make an object look entirely different at night.

If there are some shrubs, bushes or small trees in the yard that are of particular interest, choose uplighting, which is a technique in which a low voltage light is placed at the base of an object and casts its light upwards to illuminate. Uplighting not only changes the perspective of the object, but also the way it is viewed. It can make something look completely different at night and is best accomplished when the lights are hidden from view. When placing the lights, install them where people will view the object from, and set the lights so that they are out of view and casting light on the appropriate side.
