The history of the gazebo dates back through ancient history to the culture of Egypt, where pharaohs and royal families constructed large gazebo's at the top of towers. Gazebo's have been fashionable in various cultures throughout history. Their popularity waned in the early to mid 20th century before becoming popular again in the latter half of the century.
Gazebo
A gazebo is a freestanding structure with a roof. It is usually open on all four sides of the structure. A gazebo is designed to allow the user to remain outdoors while providing shade and shelter from the sun and adverse weather conditions. The origin of the word gazebo is not accurately recorded, with theories including the use of the word in the book "New Designs for Chinese Temples" published in 1752, The Gazebo Hut reports. In this book the term ebo was placed upon the word gaze, because the gazebo was usually positioned for scenic views. The word is also based on the Latin term meaning I Shall Gaze.
History
After the initial style of gazebo construction in Egypt, the gazebo began to be used in Egyptian gardens. Murals within tombs show Egyptian garden gazebos from around 1400 B.C., The Gazebo Hut reports. The ancient Greeks and Romans constructed large stone gazebos in garden settings from marble materials for use in summer properties along the Mediterranean coast. The construction of gazebos includes the building of ornate two-story buildings in 10th century Persia constructed to span streams and ponds.
Materials
The gazebo can be constructed to include permanent and mobile structures that can be moved to different locations. Wood is commonly used in gardens, parks and public areas for permanent structures. During the 1900s, the gazebo was often constructed in public parks as a bandstand. Portable gazebos include materials such as nylon and polyester to provide shelter and shade from weather conditions. In countries with large flying insect populations and insect disease the use of screens and mesh from the side of the gazebo is common to deter insects.
Japanese
The popularity of the gazebo in western Europe, especially the United Kingdom, and in the United States was based on the popularity of Japanese and Chinese culture in the 19th century. Gazebos were often used in Japan and China for meditation and contemplation. Japanese tea ceremonies were often held in gazebos. During the 19th century, gazebos were used in Europe as observation points.
