Gazebos are a focal point in a landscape and offer protection from the sun while you're outside. The construction of a gazebo consists of walls and a roof. A floor inside the gazebo is optional. If a dirt floor is not acceptable, a wood or cement floor can be installed later. A home-made gazebo offers the builder a chance to customize the structure.
Instructions
- 1
Remove the debris and large plants from the building site. The ideal site is level with the lawn. Drive a wooden stake into the ground with a hammer in the center of the area. Measure 5 feet from the center stake in four directions and drive a wooden stake in the ground at each point. These stakes mark the corners of the gazebo.
2Tie a piece of twine to one of the corners and wrap each stake with the twine to form a square. The twine marks the walls of the gazebo. Measure 3 feet from the corner in both directions along the twine and drive a stake into the ground at each measurement. Do this with all the corners until you have 12 wooden stakes along the outer edge of the gazebo.
3Dig post holes 30 inches deep with a post-hole digger at each wooden stake. Keep the sides of the holes straight up and down. Tamp the soil in the bottom of each hole with the end of a wooden board and pour 6 inches of gravel into the holes. Place a 4-inch-by-4-inch-by-9-foot board in each hole.
4Mix together a batch of cement in a wheelbarrow following the directions on the package. Use a carpenters level to keep the posts upright and fill the holes with cement using a shovel. Clean up the wheelbarrow and shovel. Let the cement dry according to the time on the package.
5Cut eight 1-by-4-inch boards to 3-foot lengths using a saw. Measure 2 inches from the ground and mark the posts. Line up the bottom edge of the boards with the mark and screw them into the posts with an electric screwdriver. Secure 1-inch-by-4-inch-by-10-foot boards around the top of the gazebo frame with screws.
6Cut trellis panels that fit the 3-foot gaps at the corners. Screw the panels in place, securing them at the bottom and the top of the frame. Screw a 1-inch-by-4-inch-by-10-foot board to the bottom of each pre-made roof truss. The boards should meet in a 90-degree angle.
7Fasten the roof trusses to opposite ends of the top of the gazebo with long screws. Screw a 10-foot board to the top of the trusses connecting them. Attach two sheets of plywood to the trusses with screws. Nail shingles to the top of the roof using finishing nails. Begin at the bottom edge of the roof and work your way upward to the peak. Paint or stain the gazebo to protect it from the weather.
