Gazebos are covered structures that provide a place to rest and enjoy shade in a garden or yard. Gazebos are often round or octagonal, and are open on all sides. If you already have a gazebo but are looking for a way to update it or create a new look, you can easily do so with a little time and creativity. Here are some ideas to help you along.
Floral Additions
If your gazebo is in good condition but lacking in character, adding plants in and around it will provide instant color, life and beauty. Though gazebos bring natural elegance to a garden space, they tend to look stark if they're lacking in plant life. One simple way to bring color to your gazebo is to place hanging plants at intervals around the gazebo. For a uniform look, choose a simple flower that will grow well, such as red impatiens. If your gazebo is painted white, this will look especially striking. For another look, try growing green or flowering vines such as ivy, hibiscus or honeysuckle up the gazebo walls and across the roof beams, which will add color and shade. Finally, place potted plants inside the gazebo.
Landscaping Around the Gazebo
Another easy gazebo project is to landscape around your gazebo with large, flowering shrubs. Choose something simple, depending on your climate, such as hydrangeas or azaleas. If you plant them all the way around the gazebo, leaving only room to enter, your gazebo will instantly look more settled in your yard. If you want to try a more fun and casual look, plant sunflowers or wild zinnias all the way around the gazebo. Both kinds of flowers will grow tall and unhindered, creating a wild, unfettered garden look.
Painting Styles
If your gazebo needs a serious update, try a new paint color to change the style. If you have a simple wooden gazebo, for example, try a classic crisp white for an elegant look. Or if you're feeling the need for a change from your white gazebo, choose a much different color; a bright red, subdued blue or woodsy brown will change the style of your garden and make a new statement. For a more subtle addition, use a bright color on the trim or railings to add variety. You can get as creative as you want with paint styles, depending on your taste, but whatever you choose, it will instantly provide a fresh version of your old gazebo.
