Gazebos are porch-like, freestanding structures that are often found in public parks, zoos or even private properties. Mainstays of garden and outdoor areas dating back to the ancient Egyptians, they provide shelter from the sun and are the perfect place to picnic or relax during an outing. A well-constructed gazebo, surrounded by great landscaping, can raise property values. Stone gazebos offer a quintessential feel to outdoor spaces, hearkening back to times long ago.
History
Gazebos have been recorded as far back as 3000 BC, with the structures appearing in the garden spaces of royalty in ancient Egypt. They were also fixtures in ancient Rome, Persia, Japan and China. Early gazebos were made of stone or rock as well as wood, and rough logs were used in some cases as well. Their popularity increased in America in the middle of the 19th century with the rise of the upper middle class, and they have appeared steadily since.
Construction
A variety of types of stone can be used to construct a gazebo. Marble is a popular choice, although it is one of the more expensive varieties of stone. Other options are granite, limestone and sandstone. All are weather resistant and work well in a number of climates. Gazebos can be built on a number of different floor shapes that will affect their overall design. Octagons or hexagons create a more rounded appearance, but rectangles or squares are good choices too.
Options
In addition to basic shape, there are other options available. Stone gazebos look regal with or without a roof, and the roof can be made of cast iron or the same stone used for the rest of the structure. Another option is a pergola, which is a series of cross beams fixed upon the top of posts. You can plant vines or other foliage on the pergola to create a natural roof.
Settings
Any outdoor setting is suitable for a stone gazebo. Even if you have a small yard, there are options available for your property. Stone gazebos can be used as an ornamental piece or a large, outdoor dwelling. Gazebos look at home near a small body of water, under a tree, surrounded by shrubbery, tucked into a far corner of a yard or out in the open. A stone gazebo can add to an air of mystery you've incorporated into your place or can act as a stately point of visual interest.
