How to Make Gazebo Bird Houses

A gazebo-style birdhouse --- so named because of its familiar octagon-shaped roof --- is a common sight in the backyards of nature-loving home and property owners. The houses are prime real estate for many breeds of nesting songbirds. Usually the houses can be bought at home improvement and hardware stores, and are fairly affordable, but do-it-yourselfers can make their own for a fraction of that cost and have the satisfaction of a job well done.

Instructions

Measure a 6 inch-by-4 inch rectangle on a thick wooden board, using a ruler to ensure your lines are straight. Use a scroll saw or jigsaw to cut out the rectangle. Place the rectangle over the remaining area of the wood and draw a line around the perimeter of the rectangle. Using your first cut piece as a template to cut additional pieces ensures all pieces conform to the exact same measurement.

Cut out seven more pieces for a total of eight. Select one wooden rectangle as your "front door." Measure up from one of the short ends about 3 inches and mark the location with a dot. Generally speaking, smaller birds prefer their doors at this level as it allows for plenty of nesting on the birdhouse floor, nesting that won't interfere with coming and going.

Outfit an electric drill/screwdriver with a 1 inch bit and drill a hole completely through the wood to make the entranceway. Measure down about of an inch from the hole, mark it and drill a 1/8 inch sized hole. Measure 3 inches on a 1/8 inch dowel rod and cut it.

Apply glue to the end of the 3-inch rod and insert it into the 1/8 inch hole to make a perch underneath the entrance hole. Measure and mark two separate octagonal shaped wooden pieces on the wood to make templates for the floor and ceiling; cut each out with whichever saw you have.

Sand all edges of all the pieces with fine grit sandpaper until smooth. Pay close attention to the entrance hole, as you don't want any burrs or splinters jutting out that may hurt any future tenants. Lay one of the octagonal pieces flat, apply glue to one of the inch sides of one of the eight panels, and set the glued end on top of the octagon, flush to the edge. This makes the first wall.

Repeat the steps until all eight pieces are glued on. Allow the walls to dry before gluing the roof over the tops of the walls. Allow a full 24 hours for the glue to dry. Paint, stain, clear coat or varnish the birdhouse if desired.
