How to Clean a Canvas Canopy

Canvas has many applications, but is commonly used as an awning that extends out over a deck. Since this type of canvas is often exposed non-stop to the elements, it will collect dirt and mildew and need a regular cleaning. With the proper equipment and materials to complete the task, you can keep the canvas looking like new. Cleaning should be done at the beginning and end of the season, or at least twice a year.

Instructions

Remove any loose dirt and debris from the canvas with the push broom. Use a ladder to reach the top of the canvas, if necessary.

Fill a 5-gallon bucket with 4 gallons of water from a water hose and add 4 cups of borax to the bucket of water to make your cleaning solution.

Soak a sponge in the cleaning solution. Wipe down the inside of the canopy canvas to remove the dirt and dust.

Allow the solution to work for about 5 minutes. Rinse the cleaning solution off of the canvas with the water hose.

Re-soak the sponge and begin wiping the exterior of the canopy canvas. Use the ladder to reach the top of the canvas, if necessary.

Allow five minutes for the cleaning solution to work, then rinse off with the water hose.
