How to Create a Gazebo Look With Tulle

Backyard events present a number of decorating challenges. However, if your home is new and you have not yet adapted the yard to your lifestyle, it is still possible to provide the illusion of a gazebo without a permanent commitment. While you can use billows of colorful tulle to add romance to your venue, they need an anchor point. Your romantic bower will take shape in minutes once you decide where it will have the most visual impact.

Instructions

Clean all manufacturer's markings from each pole and fitting with powdered cleanser and a nylon scrub pad.

Don chemical-resistant gloves and wrap-around eye protection, and use 000 steel wool dipped in acetone to remove the marks if they are still visible.

Apply PVC primer to the inside of each slip-tee fitting and lay them aside.

Arrange the PVC poles so that one end of each pole overhangs the edge of your flat work surface by 3 or 4 inches.

Apply PVC primer to the last inch of the overhanging ends of each pole and allow them to dry for at least one minute.

Apply PVC cement to each pole and fitting as you did with the primer; twist a pole into each slip-tee fitting and allow the PVC cement to harden.

Spray all poles and buckets with two to three coats of acrylic paint in your chosen color.

Center each pole in a 5-gallon plastic bucket and backfill with sharp-sided, white river gravel.

Arrange the buckets so that the one holding the tallest pole is in the center and the remaining six to eight buckets are equally spaced on an imaginary circle around it, at least eight feet from the center pole.

Cut four lengths of tulle fabric of at least 24 feet long each.

Bunch each piece of tulle together along its length to make it thin enough to pass through the slip-tees and lay them all side by side.

Gather together one side of the loose ends of the bunched pile of tulle and thread the first 12 feet of the pile through the ring of the center-pole's slip-tee.

Separate the eight strands of tulle so that you can run a strand from the center pole to each of the outer poles. Thread each strand through a slip-tee.

Have helpers hold the poles while you pick and pull at the tulle to make it swag in a gentle curve from the center pole to the outer poles and to restore its fullness between each slip-tee.

Wrap the dangling ends of the tulle around the poles to conceal them from view.

Straighten the poles in each bucket if they were pulled out of position while you arranged the tulle. Move the buckets further apart or closer together as needed to create the best-looking gazebo effect.
