How to Make Camping Equipment at Home

Camping is an adventure for families and friends. However, most camping equipment available at outdoor stores has become increasingly expensive. Most of the supplies that are needed to build camping equipment can be purchased at a hardware or home supply store. Tents, camping stoves and first-aid kits can all be assembled by campers to save money.

Instructions

Cut the bottoms off both of the soda cans. One of the cans should be cut 1 to 1 1/2 inches from the bottom while the other needs to be cut 1 inch from the bottom. The two bottoms of the soda cans will form the body of the camping stove.

Drill 18 to 30 small holes around the edge of one of the bottoms of the soda cans in addition to drilling a few holes in the center. Fill the base of the camping stove, the other soda can bottom, with the perlite insulator. Align the two can bottoms and secure them together so that the can with the holes is on top.

Pour alcohol into the top of the camping stove. Use a match to light the burner. Bend a wire coat hanger so that it will sit over the camping stove and hold a pot in place.

Use a knife to insert brass rings into the edges of the tarp so that rope can be thread through when the tent is being assembled.

Drive the stakes into the ground at a suitable campsite.

Place the tarp over a sturdy tree limb or support post. Use the rope to secure the edges of the tarp to the stakes. Spray the tarp with waterproofing spray if necessary.

Assemble a first-aid kit by filling a plastic, airtight box with basic medical supplies. The Red Cross provides a list of supplies that should be included in the first-aid kit such as bandages, medical tape, thermometer, tweezers, a cold compress and latex gloves.

Include any necessary specific medications, ointments or pain-relieving drugs based on your or your family's personal health problems. If you are allergic to insect stings, for example, an epinephrine injector and antihistamines could prove life-saving.

Store the first-aid kit in a specific location made known to every member of your camping party. In the case of an emergency, seconds count -- and without knowing what kind of accident may occur, or to whom, it is necessary for everyone involved to be knowledgeable on how to provide care as quickly and thoroughly as possible.

Regularly restock your kit. Medical supplies get used up and expire. Make sure that before each excursion you make sure your kit is fully stocked.
