Low Deck Ideas

A low deck or platform deck is a deck which is built level with the ground, typically on a free-standing foundation. The foundation of a low deck is usually built of notched concrete blocks which sit atop the ground and wooden planks which fit into the notches on the concrete blocks. According to Black and Decker, low decks create a noninvasive and aesthetically appealing outdoor floor surface. Low decks offer many different design options to add a stylized element of design to the exterior of a home.

Multiple levels can be added to the low deck to raise it up a few feet in height and add steps leading up to the main deck space. The multiple levels of a low deck are built descending in size from the top down. The sizes can slightly decrease by approximately 12 inches in length, creating small and traditional stairs leading up to the deck area. Another option is to decrease the size of each level drastically, creating depth and adding multiple platforms for a stylized appeal.

Although low decks don't typically require the addition of rails because they are at ground level, railing can create a stylish and traditional deck appearance. Railing can be installed around the entire perimeter of the deck in the traditional style, creating an enclosed patio feel. Railing can also be installed in small segments around the decking area to accent certain features on the deck. For example, installing railing specifically around the dining and grilling area will create a formal appearance near the patio furniture while creating a spacious appeal elsewhere. Railing can also be added to accent plants or to provide additional privacy for the low deck area.

The addition of a gazebo attached to a low deck lends a luxurious style to the area. Gazebos are typically purchased to simply sit atop the ground as a landscaping accent; because they are low to the ground a gazebo can easily be attached to a low deck. This can be as simple as purchasing a gazebo from your local home improvement store and installing it so that its base touches the edge of the low deck. The addition of a gazebo can be used to allow for more comfortable social gatherings, dining and general relaxation on the low deck area.
