Ideas for Columns and Arches

Arches and columns are two architectural details that enjoyed popularity during the 1880s and 1890s as key elements of a style called Romanesque Revival. This style has a strong European tone; incorporating elements of this style into your home will give it more of an Old World flavor. You don't need to completely reconstruct your house to achieve this look.

Arched trellises are common in gardens and other outdoor spaces, often at the head of the path that leads into the yard or garden. Provide this simple look with a more stately effect by using an arched marble, granite, limestone, travertine or brick doorway with columns on either side. Although it's slightly harder to get plants to climb and hang off of these materials than the simple wood grid of a trellis, this type of piece adds a great deal of presence, setting an clear focal point in the yard. You'll need to provide support to encourage the plants to climb, such as a small trellis or stakes beside the columns.

Instead of opting for a traditional style gazebo for the backyard, consider spending a bit more to create something that is not only more durable but will make the backyard look like it's part of the grounds at a museum. Construct a gazebo made of stone, brick or marble and instead of traditional wood posts, use stately columns. The columns can be ribbed, straight, fluted, ionic or Corinthian; it all depends on what you prefer. Between each column, the entry space should have an arched top, surrounding the domed ceiling. This will give you an unforgettable space for outdoor entertaining and weekend brunches.

Using arches and columns together can give the entire exterior of your house an instant facelift, making it seem more elegant. Substitute plaster or marble columns for wood pillars or brick posts to support the porch roof. Instead of a traditionally straight-edged porch roof, create one with arches to give the front of your house a more regal look. Alternatively, consider a single arch in the porch roof in the dead center of the front of the house as a distinctive interesting architectural detail.

Just as columns on the porch accentuate the entryway of a house, columns also can produce this effect inside a home. Columns emphasize a room and frame the doorway in a stately manner. For example, columns on either side of the entryway to the dining room or living room celebrate these rooms, making it clear to guests they're entering a special place. To make the effect even more dramatic, arch the doorway above the columns for an elegant Romanesque revival look.
