How to Use Plastic Mesh on a Gazebo

A gazebo is a roofed structure that is open on the sides to allow you to view the gardens and landscape. It is becoming more common to use outdoor rooms, like gazebos, as garden destinations. To make the gazebo more comfortable in the evening when bugs are more prevalent, many people opt to screen in the gazebo. Part of the screening process involves adding support and a barrier along the bottom of the screen to prevent small children and animals from moving through the screen. Plastic mesh is used to help strengthen the lower part of the gazebo screens.

Instructions

Measure the height of the screened gazebo from the base or decking to the railing. Measure around the perimeter of the gazebo, starting on one side of the screen door and finishing on the other side of the screen door. Cut plastic mesh fabric to these measurements. The screen door is dealt with separately.

Place outdoor canvas on the cutting mat. Cut 4-inch-wide strips. You will need enough strips to go around the perimeter twice, plus the height of the mesh for each post. Join strips together by sewing a 1/2-inch seam along the short ends. Iron the seams open with an iron and board.

Place the strip on the work table face side down. Fold 1-inch of each side to the middle along the length. Iron the folds. Fold the right fold over to align with the left fold and iron the center fold. This is a double-folded tape. Place the edge of the mesh inside the fold of the tape. Sew a seam 1/4-inch from the top edge fold. Sew a second parallel seam 1/2-inch below the first seam. Fold the corners of the strips under to create a diagonal corner. Sew around all four sides of the mesh.

Position the mesh on the gazebo so that the ends align with the posts on either side of the screen door. Mark the center of each post on the mesh with tailor's chalk. Draw a vertical line from the top of the mesh to the bottom. Cut double-fold tape to fit between the top and bottom tape. Sew the tape centered on each line. Sew two seams 1/2 inch apart. Sew all the tapes on the same side of the mesh.

Cut hook-and-loop tape the same height as your vertical strips. Press the adhesive side of the hook tape to the outside of each post. The mesh attaches to the gazebo only at the posts. If your posts are wood, add staples to help secure the tape to the posts. Sew the loop portion of the tape to the double-fold tape using two parallel seams. Press your plastic mesh to the hook-and-loop tapes to secure it to the gazebo.

Measure the lower portion of the gazebo screen door. Make a plastic mesh panel using the same double-fold tape and hook-and-loop tape techniques. Attach the mesh to the inside of the door when possible for added strength.
