Whether you are building your gazebo from a kit or from scratch, you need to install a foundation first before the building is completed. Since gazebos are relatively lightweight, a system of concrete anchors or footings is typically used. These are very similar to the footings used in a deck installation. However, they are arranged differently to accommodate the shape of the gazebo. It is a project that anyone with basic how-to knowledge will be able to accomplish in a weekend.
Instructions
- 1
Site the location of the footings for the gazebo using a tape measure and the gazebo dimensions. Mark each location for the footing with an "x" in red spray paint on the ground. There is a footing in the center of the gazebo and then one footing for each point or "corner" of the hexagonal shape.
2Excavate a one foot diameter hole on each spot using the auger and clam shell digger to make the hole. Dig down one foot removing all soil from the hole, checking the vertical alignment of each hole with a wood stake and carpenter's level as you work.
3Lay an one inch layer of gravel into each hole as drainage. Tamp down the gravel with a tamping tool.
4Mix your concrete mortar in a wheel barrel with a shovel to a smooth but thick consistency. Pour the concrete into the hole until it reaches the surface of the ground.
5Repeat Step 4 on each of the holes. Lay an 8-foot board on edge across each adjacent set of footings. Use a carpenter's level to check the board for levelness. If the footings are not level, add concrete to the lower side to level them off.
