How to Make Outdoor Curtains for Shade

Hang a set of outdoor curtains so that you can enjoy your deck or patio while keeping the hot sun off your back. Outdoor shade curtains are simple to make, and are really no different from curtains you would make to hang in a window, except you should use a fabric that will not deteriorate outside. Look for an outdoor fabric in a fun pattern that matches the rest of your decor. You can also make several sets of curtains for the different seasons.

Instructions

Measure the width and height of the areas where you will hang the curtains. For instance, if you are hanging a set of curtains on the side of a front porch, measure the height from the porch flooring to where the curtain rod will hang and the width from wall to porch column.

Cut two curtain panels for each area you will hang the curtains in. Cut the panels so that they measure width of the area by the height plus 6 inches. If the side of the front porch measures 7 feet wide by 9 feet high, cut two panels that measure 7 feet by 9 feet, 6 inches.

Fold the two long sides of each panel--the ones that will run vertically--over half an inch toward the wrong side of the fabric and press. Fold over one more inch, press and pin and in place. Stitch in place along the edge.

Fold the bottom and top edge over half an inch toward the wrong side and press. Fold the bottom edge up one more inch and pin in place. Fold the top edge over 4 inches, forming the curtain-rod pocket, then press and pin in place. Stitch both along the small folds.

Mount the curtain-rod hardware. Slide the curtains on the rod and hang it. Push aside or tie back the curtains when you want to let sun in.
