How do I Tighten a Turnbuckle?

Turnbuckles are a type of tensioner that allow relatively precise control of the tension between two cables. Turnbuckles get their name from the fact that they cause cables to buckle or tighten through simple turning.

How Do I Tighten a Turnbuckle?

A turnbuckle can be tightened by turning the middle portion of the shaft so the female threaded ends of each shaft screw into the male connectors that are attached to the cables to be tensioned. Turning the middle of a turnbuckle is accomplished either by a simple wrench that fits the middle of a hexagonal turnbuckle, or by inserting a lever into an opening in the middle of the turnbuckle and twisting by hand.

How Much Tension?

The amount of tension exerted on the cables attached to a turnbuckle depends on how tight the two cable were before you began turning and on how much slack you take up. Remember that turnbuckles can only tighten the distance of the threaded ends of the screws.

Releasing

You can release the tension in a turnbuckle by simply twisting it in the opposite direction.
