Ideas for Outdoor Roofing

Whether building a new home or updating an existing home, there are a wide variety of outdoor roofing options. Roofs are one of the main features of a house, so the type of roof has a major impact on the overall style. Outdoor roofing options may need to be chosen for a house, a covered patio or even for an outdoor gazebo. Installing outdoor roofing is a difficult task that may be best left to professionals.

Shingles

Asphalt shingles are one of the most commonly used materials for outdoor roofing because they are affordable and easy to work with. This may be the best material for homeowners who want to install the roofing themselves. They are available in a wide variety of colors to match the home's exterior. Asphalt on these types of shingles may be applied to an organic paper or glass fiber reinforcing mat. They have an average life span of 20 to 40 years, depending on the quality of the shingle, but they tend to last longer in colder climates. One of the major advantages of choosing shingles for outdoor roofing is that they are easy to repair because they can be replaced one shingle at a time instead of tearing up an entire section of roof.

Metal

Another favorite choice for outdoor roofing is metal. Homeowners can choose from a wide variety of colors, including red, green, blue or the unfinished look of silver metal panels. Some homeowners may simply tack down sheets of galvanized, corrugated tin -- a style ideal for country homeowners who want the experience of raindrops on tin roofs. Standing seam metal roofs are a good alternative for homeowners who want a more finished look on their roof. Metal panels are laid on the roof and crimped to make watertight ridges. The sleek metal surface allows snow to slide off easily, which can tear gutters off the side of the home. Add metal snowbirds to the metal roof to prevent large amounts of snow from sliding off at once.

Tiles

Roofing tiles are the ideal choice when a natural, structured look is desired. Stone slate tiles were once the standard roofing, which is why they can be seen on so many historic buildings. They are relatively expensive, but their durability make them well worth the investment; when properly installed, a slate roof may last for more than 100 years. Install slate tiles with roofing nails. Terracotta tiles are commonly used for Spanish and Mediterranean style architecture. Terracotta is a reddish-brown, ceramic made from clay, creating a natural look for a home's exterior. They are wavy tiles that are interlocked and installed with nails or cement.

Patio Roofing

A patio can be enjoyed for outdoor living in all weather conditions if there is some type of roofing material over the area. Total waterproofing isn't as essential as for house roofs, so homeowners can feel more confident installing patio roofs themselves. Corrugated fiberglass roofing works well over patios because it is durable, lightweight and fairly easy to install. The fiberglass panels are penetrable to light, so homeowners can still receive natural light on the patio without the sun's full glare. The grooves of corrugated fiberglass helps to guide water runoff. Retractable awnings are also ideal for patio roofs because they provide shade and shelter from rain. A major benefit is that they can be rolled away when full sun is desired on the patio.
