They have an average life span of 20 to 40 years, depending on the quality of the shingle, but they tend to last longer in colder climates. One of the major advantages of choosing shingles for outdoor roofing is that they are easy to repair because they can be replaced one shingle at a time instead of tearing up an entire section of roof.

Another favorite choice for outdoor roofing is metal. Homeowners can choose from a wide variety of colors, including red, green, blue or the unfinished look of silver metal panels. Some homeowners may simply tack down sheets of galvanized, corrugated tin -- a style ideal for country homeowners who want the experience of raindrops on tin roofs. Standing seam metal roofs are a good alternative for homeowners who want a more finished look on their roof. Metal panels are laid on the roof and crimped to make watertight ridges. The sleek metal surface allows snow to slide off easily, which can tear gutters off the side of the home.
