How to Shade a Sunny Deck

Adding shade to your deck can provide you with many more hours of relaxation outside. Shade can cool down an area so that you can enjoy the outdoors without the fear of overexposure of the sun, but well-placed shade trees can take decades to grow. You can create quick shade by having an awning installed professionally or by adding shade yourself. The easiest way to do it yourself is by adding portable shade, such as umbrellas, shade sails and pop-up tents or gazebos. All are simple to install and not very expensive.

Instructions

Select the best size patio umbrella for your deck size. The standard sized patio umbrella is 9 feet in diameter. This is good for a smaller deck that is 12-by-12 feet. Choose an 11-foot umbrella for larger areas.

Use an umbrella stand or a patio table that is made to hold a umbrella. An umbrella table will have a hole in the center.

Place the umbrella into the stand or in the table and tilt the shade so that it blocks the suns rays from where you are sitting. It should be placed directly between you and the sun.

Move the umbrella shade as necessary when the sun moves in order to provide maximum shade.

Add quick shade without a table or umbrella base by attaching a lightweight "shade sail" made of sun- and UV-ray-blocking polyethylene fabric. Shade sails have grommets around the edges and can be attached with rings, clips and ties to roofs, trees and posts or poles. Less-expensive grommeted painter's canvas tarps can also create instant shade just where you want it.

Remove the gazebo from its carrying case and set it so that it is standing on the bottom part of the legs.

Spread the legs of the gazebo out over the area you'll be covering. Pull the legs open to form a large square. Keep the canvas tight.

Press the button that is located at the top of the leg base. This will extend the legs up to maximum height.

Move the gazebo as the sun moves in order to maintain shade.
