How to Clean a Patio Canopy

A patio canopy provides a shaded outdoor area, typically covering an outdoor sitting or dining area. To keep the patio looking its best, you want to keep the canopy clean and well-maintained. This means you must wash the canopy in a way that removes all traces of bird droppings, dust, pollen and any other residue that builds up. A mild cleaning routine can be used on any type of patio canopy without causing damage.

Instructions

Rinse off the canopy with the garden hose. Do this regularly when you notice small areas of buildup and this is typically all you will need to do to keep the canopy looking its best.

Fill a bucket with about 1 gallon water, and add in two squirts of dish soap and an optional 3/4 cup of bleach if you notice mold or mildew growth.

Remove the canopy and place on the ground when possible, or use a ladder to clean higher areas that are difficult to reach. If using the bleach, clean away from grass and plants as this can kill off some vegetation. Alternatively, replace the chlorine bleach with oxygen bleach, which works just as well but causes no damage to the surrounding landscape.

Dip a nylon scrub brush into the cleaning solution, and scrub over your patio canopy. Continue until the entire canopy is cleaned to your liking.

Rinse the canopy with the hose one final time and allow it to air dry.
