Gazebos have been an enchanting addition to gardens for more than 5,000 years, dating back to the days of ancient Rome and Egypt where they were considered earthly paradises. Even a simple hexagonal gazebo will add a delightful feature to your garden. It will add instant height for climbing plants and transform your outdoor space -- if not to paradise, at least to a beautiful and useful garden room.

Plan and Measure
- 1
Measure the ground where the gazebo will be sited and mark out with stakes and string the six points where the gazebo posts will be placed. Use a tape measure to check they are the same distance apart.
2Dig out holes for each post to a depth of 18 inches and 4 inches wider than each post. Add sand and cement mix to the bottom of each hole. This should be 3 inches deep at the bottom. Stand the post in and secure with more sand and cement, packing it tightly around the post until it reaches ground level. Use a spirit level to ensure the posts are straight. Water in with a hose and sprinkler or a watering can using a gentle flow until all the water is absorbed. Check with the spirit level again. Leave overnight to set.
3Create an open roof. Measure and cut three lengths of wood approximately 4 inches wide, 1 inch thick and 6 inches longer than the diameter of the gazebo. Screw the wood lengths into the top of the six posts going from diagonal to diagonal. The extra length will allow you to secure the roof slats to the center of the posts.
4Add extra support to the structure by adding criss-crossed wooden stakes at the top of the structure between each pair of posts. Use string to measure the distance between a point 6 inches from the top of one post and halfway down the adjacent post. Mark these points on all the posts. Cut 10 lengths of wood, each 1 inch thick to this size and screw them into place using the marks as reference points so that they make an X shape between five of the six posts Leave an entrance way between the fifth and sixth posts.
5Measure the distance between each post, add six inches and cut five decorative steel chains. Fix the chains from each post to the next just below the X shaped wooden supports. Use 10 U-shaped pins to secure the chains without sharp edges.
6Add planting to the six points of the gazebo. Choose a mix of climbing plants which flower in different seasons to create a year-round interest.
