How to Build an Indian Arch

The Indian -- or more correctly, Hindu -- wedding arch is more similar to the Jewish chuppah than a western-style arched trellis. The arch, called a mandap, forms the wedding canopy under which a Hindu couple marries. A traditional mandap is a simple structure made of four columns eight or ten feet high arranged in a square shape. The columns may have supports between them, or may have fabric or other material draped between the standards. It's possible to make a simple mandap for a low cost.

Instructions

    1

Purchase a popup gazebo frame through an online auction site or at a discount or sporting goods store. Watch for sales, and purchase at $60 to $100. Since the fabric cover is not of interest to you, you may find a great deal on gazebo with a torn or weathered fabric cover. Remove the old cover.

    2

Sew covers for the leg supports and the cross bars. Traditional Hindu wedding colors are red, orange maroon and gold, but modern couples often venture away from those restrictions. Use the same solid color for the base coverings. Cut long rectangles of the fabric 8 feet long in a diameter large enough to wrap around the legs. Hem all sides. Secure hook and loop closures every 8 to 12 inches up the legs to hold the coverings closed. Use two hook and loop closures at the top to hook the covers to the cross supports and hold it in place.

    3

Sew coverings for the cross supports. Cut rectangles of fabric 8 feet plus 2 inches long, and wide enough to cover the cross supports plus and extra 2 inches. Hem all sides with 1/2 inch hems folded over twice. Secure with hook and loop closures ever 8 to 12 inches. Sew hook and loop strips on the ends to attach the sides together.

    4

Drape the center supports with light fabric. Since the traditional mandap does not have a center covering, loosely wrapping the supports in colorful tulle or organza can cover the metal supports while still providing an airy feel.

    5

Drape the legs and cross supports with light fabric. Cover the base material with the colorful organza or tulle in various colors. Use strips of tulle for ties on the supports to help hold the base fabric in place and provide extra decoration.
