How to Protect Screened in Deck Tents From Wind

Deck tents are simple canopies erected over a deck to provide cover as well as protection from the sun, rain and other weather elements. One problem deck tents can have is they can act as a sail when confronted with heavy wind. The tent can catch the wind and possibly tear or detach and fly away if the winds are strong enough. Protecting a screened-in deck tent from the wind requires some diligence to keep your tent in top shape.

Instructions

    1

Anchor the deck tent firmly into the ground. Deck tents should come with anchors designed to hold it in place against the elements but you can replace them with heavier-duty ones from a hardware store if you feel you need to. Use long foundation stakes for softer ground.

    2

Keep the tent open in extreme winds to eliminate the "sail" effect. Keeping the tent open in this circumstance allows the wind to flow through the screens of the tent instead of pushing against it. The deck is not likely to sustain damage since decks are usually durable against the weather.

    3

Lower the tent if very severe winds are coming to prevent damage. If the winds are strong enough, even an open tent can tear or pull away from the ground. Resurrect the tent after the weather passes since the supports will still be in place.
