Definition
A gazebo generally refers to an outdoor structure with a roof, deck and open walls, usually located in a park or garden. A gazebo is often placed in a spot where people can take in a pleasant view from its deck. Musicians and other entertainers may use larger gazebos in parks as performance spaces.
Early History
Gazebos first appeared in an early form about 5,000 years ago in ancient Egypt, decorating the gardens of the wealthy. They started out as stone towers on the roofs of houses where people could enjoy the layouts of their gardens. They remained popular centuries later in ancient Rome.
Middle History
In Renaissance Europe, gazebos decorated the gardens and courtyards of monasteries. In the 1300s, the French built four gazebos at the Louvre. In the 1400s, their popularity spread throughout the rest of Europe.
Emergence of the Word
The word "gazebo" emerged in English around 1752, at a time when Europeans began building Chinese-style gazebo structures, or "summerhouses," in gardens all over the continent. The word's origin is unknown, although it might be a play on the word "gaze."
Gazebos in America
Gazebos were slow to spread to the United States. They started appearing in the mid-1800s, but didn't really take off until the 1930s as structures used in the yards of middle class people. In the 1940s, patios and decks grew in popularity, and gazebos started to fall out of favor.
Gazebos Today
Today you can buy ready-built wooden gazebos at a lawn and garden store or a shed store. Just pick one out and have it delivered. They are a popular addition to public parks, and many musicians and other entertainers perform in park gazebos during the summer months.
