How to Make a Gazebo Roof for a Bird Feeder

Bird feeders come in many sizes and shapes. Designed for specific types of birds, they can also resemble full-sized architecture, including the gazebo, an octagonal structure open on the sides. Using the same design for a bird feeder is practical as well as stylish. The open sides allow many types of birds to fly into the feeder and the gazebo roof protects the food from the weather. Making the roof is not difficult but does require some woodworking skills to achieve the desired effect.

Instructions

Measure the diameter of the birdfeeder base and divide in half.

Cut eight pieces of wood each in a wedge shape. The wedges will equal the length derived from Step 1 plus 1 inch to allow for the slope in the roof. If the diameter is 8 inches, the roof pieces will be 5 inches long and approximately 2 inches wide at the widest point.

Fit the wedge shapes together at a s sloped angle to form a peak in the center. You want the roof to extend over the edge of the base of the feeder, so adjust the slope as necessary but do not make a flat roof.

Glue the pieces together using weather-resistant epoxy glue and allow to dry for 24 hours.

Sand the roof. Use a medium grade sandpaper with a grit of 80 to 120. Finish using a fine grit sandpaper rated 150 to 180.

Fit the roof on the birdfeeder. Secure it to the pillars of the gazebo with screws. Drill a small hole for each, using a quarter-inch bit through the top of the roof and tighten the wood and attach the wood screws to the roof, tightening them firmly.

Paint the roof. Use a wood stain or outdoor paint to protect the wood from rot.
