How to Protect a Gazebo Canopy

A gazebo in a yard adds a look of distinction that few outdoor amenities can. The canopy on most gazebos is constructed of wood, sometimes in the form of shake shingles and sometimes flat. Over time and with exposure to weather, the canopy can become moss-covered and even rot if it's not properly protected. Protecting a gazebo canopy requires a bi-annual procedure to ensure many years of enjoyment.

Instructions

Spray the canopy with a garden hose to remove large debris.

Fill a garden sprayer with a 50-50 mixture of water and bleach.

Apply the mixture in the garden sprayer to the canopy and scrub the surface with a long-handled brush. Work your way around the canopy, spraying and scrubbing the entire surface.

Rinse the canopy thoroughly with a garden hose.

Pour a water seal into the garden sprayer after rinsing it thoroughly with the hose.

Start at the top of the canopy and apply the water seal to the entire surface. Don't miss any part of the canopy as you work the sprayer back and forth. Allow the water seal to dry according to the directions on the can. Apply a second coat to ensure proper protection.
