How Do I Tighten the Slack in a Gazebo?

During the assembly of many gazebos, a heavy-duty steel wire, called a "turnbuckle cable," is wrapped around the wooden posts to support, center and stabilize the structure. The turnbuckle cable is often located near the top of the gazebo near the underside of the roof. During assembly, the turnbuckle cable is adjusted to the necessary tension, but strong winds, earthquakes and poor construction may cause the tension to release, which may lead to an unstable structure.

Instructions

    1

Set up the ladder next to the gazebo and climb to the top. Have somebody stand on the ground and hold the ladder steady.

    2

Locate the turnbuckle cable, which rests underneath the roof of the gazebo and runs along the inner walls of the outer posts. Locate the eyes, which are the two loops on which the cables are attached.

    3

Move the ladder near one of the eyes. Put on a pair of protective eye goggles and workman's gloves. Grab an adjustable wrench and climb up to the top. Have somebody stand on the ground and hold the ladder steady while you work.

    4

Locate the clamp on the cable nearest to the eye. Clamps are located along the entire length of the cable and are tightened to provide tension.

    5

Grab the cable and hold it steady with one hand. While holding the cable, tighten the clamp using an adjustable wrench using your other hand. Tighten it slowly to avoid stripping the metal.

    6

Move the ladder near the second eye.

    7

Grab the cable with one hand and tighten the nearest clamp with an adjustable wrench using your other hand, just as you did with the first clamp.

    8

Repeat this process, moving from one end of the cable to the other, tightening each clamp until the desired tension is reached. Do not over tighten the clamps; too much tension can lead to structural instability and damage. Consult the gazebo's owner's manual for proper tension specifications.
