How to Use Cement Anchors

Written By Unknown on Senin, 16 Desember 2013 | 13.27

Cement anchors can be your saving grace when you must secure wood or metal items to your concrete walls. Subfloor levels, workshops and commercial buildings typically have cement walls. Attempting to hang a picture or a pair of shelves on the concrete wall can prove extremely difficult if you choose the wrong type of hanger for them. Knowing your own expectations and the weight of your object helps when deciding what type of cement anchor you should use.

Instructions

    1

Check the manufacturer's specifications to ensure you have the right cement anchor for the job. Attempting to secure an item to cement with an improper anchor may cause damage to the anchor, item or cement.

    2

Drill a pilot hole for any cement anchor you need with a hammer drill. This specially made drill is designed to drill into concrete easily without major damage to the drill bit. Using a regular drill to make holes in cement is not advised, as the drill bit can break and cause injury.

    3

Use plastic anchors to hang pictures, shelves and other light items that weigh less than 50 lbs. on cement surfaces. Drill the pilot hole in the proper location, and insert the plastic anchor into the hole, driving it in with a hammer.

    4

Use hammer set anchors to secure wood to cement. Hold the wood in place against the cement, and drill through it until the hole is the proper depth. Slide the hammer set anchor into the hole, and hammer it in. The end of the anchor will expand to support the wood. Keep in mind the extreme difficulty of removing these fasteners from the cement.

    5

Use a sleeve anchor to secure heavier items, weighing up to 200 lbs., to a cement structure. Drill a pilot hole through the object to the proper depth in the cement, and insert the sleeve anchor into the hole while you are holding the object firmly. Turn the nut to tighten the fastener. These fasteners work well when securing wood or metal to cement, but overtightening the nut may cause the fastener or cement to break.
