A concrete base is a great way to start a natural stone patio and saves you a lot of work if you already have a concrete slab to work from. The concrete and mortar method of installation is more time-consuming than the "dry" installation method, which uses sand and gravel, but concrete and mortar can provide a secure, lasting base for your natural stone patio.
Instructions
- 1
Measure your patio area and write down your measurements so you'll know how much material to buy.
2Pound four wood posts into the ground at each of the four corners of the existing concrete patio area. Cut down four 2-by-4s to match the length and width of the patio and attach each 2-by-4 horizontally to the bottom of the posts with a hammer and nails. These will serve as a temporary bottom border, or "form," for your patio.
3Mix the grout according to the instructions and spread enough down for two to three stones at a time. Smooth out the grout with a trowel and be sure the layer is 3/4 inch to an inch thick.
4Set the stones atop the grout one at a time, starting in a corner, and use a hand tamper to gently tap it into place. Leave approximately 3/4 inch between each stone.
5Mix up "cement butter," which is a cement-and-water mixture that is the consistency of a thick soup. Lift up each stone and lather cement butter on the bottom of the stone, then set the stone back in place. Do this every 12 stones or so.
6Lay stones and lather them with cement butter until all of your natural stones have been laid. Allow the grout to dry for 12 hours.
7Mix up a cement filler, a mixture of one part cement and two parts sand, and fill the spaces between each of the natural stones with the cement filler. Use a pointed trowel to pack the joints down tightly.
8Wipe off any cement mixture that gets on the surface of the stones immediately. Allow the cement filler to dry for 24 hours, then rinse the top surface of your new natural stone patio with a hose.
