How to Hang Lattice

Builders and homeowners often use lattice as a decorative building material; it is made from criss-crossed strips of wood, plastic or metal. The screening is a staple in garden structures; it is popular for use in trellises and gazebos. In addition to ornamentation, lattice provides support for vines and climbing plants, such as morning glories, ivies and roses. The decorative screening also is used to finish the bottoms of gazebos and decks, where it hides unsightly elements from view.

Instructions

    1

Measure the space between the 4-by-4 gazebo support posts to determine the size of the frame that will be needed. Normally lattice is available in 2-by-8 feet and 4-by-8 feet precut sheets, so spacing additional beams every 2 feet will help support the screening. This framing consists of 2-by-2 inch wooden beams screwed into the outer edge of each gazebo support post and in between each beam at 2-foot intervals, from the base of the gazebo to its railing or ceiling, depending on the gazebo design. Once the frame is outlined the lattice sheets can be attached to it.

    2

Trim any excess length off the lattice sheets with a circular saw, so that the sheets fit within the frame's measurements. This may not be necessary when covering large areas, because they should fit within the framing. For smaller areas that require tailor cuts, use the measurements of the opening and cut a piece of lattice to the exact size.

    3

Lay the lattice onto frame and pre-drill holes through the screening into the 2-by-2 framing. Lattice is made from very thin pieces of wood, which can splinter or split if the wood isn't prepared before screwing. Drill holes at every point the latticed criss-crossed edges meet the frame. Once the holes are drilled, screw the panel in place with wood screws.

    4

Match up the next panel by aligning the diagonal pattern of the lattice with the neighboring board. If done properly, the lattice work will have a seamless look. Since the boards are cut to a uniform size, they should match up easily. Once the boards are aligned, pre-drill them and screw them in place.

    5

Finish the lattice work by sealing the gazebo or trellis with wood-protecting varnish or waterproof paint.
