How to Add Stairs to a Gazebo

So, your gazebo needs stairs. Maybe it's newly built or a prefab that didn't include stairs or an older gazebo with rotted stairs. There are several ways to add them. The simplest, a set of prefab concrete steps, can be purchased at mobile home suppliers, lumber yards or home improvement outlets and set in place. If you'd rather build them yourself, however, wooden stairs look nice and hold up rather well. Do a rough sketch before buying lumber to avoid coming up short or buying too much.

Instructions

    1

Stretch a line from the edge of the gazebo's deck at a downward angle of 40 degrees. Where the string hits the ground is where the stairs will land. Measure the distance. This will be the length of the bottom side of the stringers. Mark the spot. Measure from the spot to the edge of the gazebo deck at the ground to determine the run length of the stairs. Write down these measurements as you go.

    2

Extend a long board on its edge out beyond the deck. Use a level to mark where the board passes directly above the spot on the ground you marked in step 1 Measure the height from the bottom of the board to the spot on the ground. This is the total rise. Divide the rise by 7 inches -- the average riser height. Round the answer down to get the number of risers you'll need.

    3

Subtract 1 from the number of risers to get the number of steps. Divide the total run length by the number of stairs. Add 1/2 inch to the answer to give the steps an overhanging lip. Measure the width you plan to make the stairs and add 2 inches. Cut 2-by-12s that long and rip them the width you figured. Divide the total rise from step 1 by the number of steps to get the exact height of the riser cuts.

    4

Cut 2-by-12s the length you determined for the bottom side of the stringers in step 1. Measure and mark a 50-degree angle with its apex at the bottom corner of the upper end of a stringer and cutting off the top corner of the stringer. Cut off the triangular piece.

    5

Measure from the opposite end of the cut you just made away from the gazebo end. Measure and mark the top of the stringer, the width of a step minus 1/2 inch from the outside end of the fresh cut. Measure and mark a 90-degree angle from the mark you just made going down. Cut off this piece. This cut will be the face of the stringer that is screwed to the edge of the deck. The top step will screw into the top of the stringer.

    6

Mark notches for the steps in the stringers using the squares. Mark a line 90 degrees down from the front top corner of the stringer. Mark the line as long as the riser height you figured in Step 3.

    7

Mark a 90-degree angle from the base of the riser line toward the front of the stringer. This makes a notch to set the steps on. Mark the rest of the step notches to the bottom of the stringer. Cut out the notches with a reciprocating saw, then use the first stringer as a pattern for the others.

    8

Screw the stringer top ends against the deck edge 2 inches closer together than the width of the stairs. Pilot-drill the holes. Add a third stringer, if you need one, halfway between the outside ones.

    9

Screw the steps in place so they overhang the outside stringers evenly.

    10

Measure the riser space above each step, rip and cut the 1-by-8s to fit above and behind each step and in front of the bottom step. Screw the risers in place to complete the assembly.
