There are a wide variety of shelters and portable gazebos available commercially. The average price for these shelters runs from $60 and up. For less money and more utility, you can make a canopy that best fits your needs. These instructions are for an 8-foot by 8-foot canopy.
Instructions
- 1
Securely clamp a 7-foot pole in the workbench so that you can drill a hole axially (along the length of the pole).
2With the 3/16-inch drill bit, drill a 2-inch deep hole in the end of the pole. Repeat steps 1 and 2 for the remaining 7-foot pole and two 8-foot poles.
3Screw a length of threaded rod into each pole, leaving 4 inches of rod exposed. These are the support poles for the canopy.
4Measure and mark a line 1 inch from each end of the remaining 8-foot poles.
5Secure a marked pole in the workbench.
6With the 3/8-inch drill bit, drill holes through both ends of the pole at the 1-inch mark. Be certain that your holes are parallel. They must go through the pole in the same direction.
7Repeat steps 5 and 6 for each marked pole. These are the crosspieces of the canopy.
8Slide a crosspiece over the bolts of both 7-foot support poles and secure each end with a wingnut. This will form a u-shape.
9Slide a crosspiece over the bolts of both 8-foot support poles and secure each end with a wingnut. This will form another u-shape.
10Lay the two U-shaped sides 8 feet apart. Remove the wingnuts of the 7-foot and 8-foot poles closest to each other and slide a crosspiece over the bolts. Secure this crosspiece with wingnuts. This creates three sides of a box-shaped frame.
11Set the frame up on the support pole with bolts pointing upwards.
12Remove the wingnuts from the 7-foot and 8-foot poles not yet connected and slide the last crosspiece over the bolts. Replace the wingnuts. You now have a completed frame.
13Use the step-stool to reach the top of the support poles. Remove a wingnut, slide the grommet in the corner of the tarp over the bolt, and replace the wingnut.
14Repeat step 12 with each corner of the tarp, taking care to keep the tarp flat and untwisted.
