How to Build a Model Corn Crib

Corn cribs are traditional structures found in rural areas, near corn fields. Corn cribs store and dry corn in an elevated structure with posts that lift the corn crib off the ground, avoiding moisture. Wood slats clad the structure and gaps between the slats provide air circulation to hasten drying. The roof is nonporous, providing shelter from rain and snow. To build a model corn crib, use scaled wooden slats and dowels, similar to the construction of a real corn crib.

Instructions

    1

Determine the height of your model corn crib and determine how high you would like to lift the crib off the ground. Add the two heights together and cut four dowels to that dimension. For example, a 3 inch crib, lifted 1 inch off of the ground, requires 4 inch posts.

    2

Determine the width of the model corn crib and determine the crib's depth. Cut four dowels equal in length to the width and depth of the model corn crib. For example, a 3 inch wide, 5 inch deep, corn crib requires four 3 inch dowels and four 5 inch dowels.

    3

Glue two dowels, equal to the crib depth, on top of two dowels, equal to the crib width, leaving a gap at each end, equal to the diameter of the dowels. The assembly should look like a pound sign -- "". Repeat Step 3 to create a second assembly.

    4

Glue the assemblies to the four posts, cut in Step 1, at the determined heights above the ground. In the example, the 3 inch by 5 inch assembly is glued 1 inch above base of the four posts and at the top of the four posts.

    5

Cut four equal length dowels, approximately two-thirds the width of the model corn crib. Cut diagonally one end of each of the four dowels. Glue two dowels together at the diagonal cut to create a V or L shape. Repeat this with the other two dowels. Glue the V shapes upside- down at either end of the model corn crib to create a gable form.

    6

Cut two dowels nearly the height of the crib interior to create the styles, or posts, for an opening at one end of the crib. Glue the posts to one end of the crib, approximately wide enough for a person at the scale of the model.

    7

Glue the horizontal bass wood slats onto the corn crib model, leaving a slight gap between each, except along the roof, which should have slats abut one another and extend beyond the edges of the crib walls. Remember to leave an opening at one end of the crib, as well as cover the triangular pediment with slats, under the gable.
