Ideas for Decorating an Outdoor Wedding Ceremony

The way you choose to decorate for your outdoor wedding depends on a lot of factors, including the venue. If you are getting married seaside, your decorations will be different from what you'd would choose if you were getting married in a garden or on top of a mountain. Another factor is the style of your wedding. If your wedding is elegant and formal versus casual and simple, this will impact your choice of decorations. A good thing to keep in mind is that the natural scenery is part of your decor, and you won't need as many decorative elements as you might in an indoor wedding. Take advantage of the natural landscape.

Many brides choose to place an arch at the site where the vows are to be exchanged. If there is already an arbor or gazebo present, half the work is done for you. Streaming flower garlands over the entrance to the gazebo or over the top of an arbor is an elegant look. Decorate the arch as you please, either using flowers or greenery; you may opt to drape it in swatches of material, such as tulle or organza that will be flow and blow in the wind. If you like the rustic feel, place pots and jugs filled with flowers at the bottom of the arch. If you want to turn the arch into a more woodsy feel, wrap grapevines around it or attach birch branches to the arch.

Select an aisle runner that leads up to the arch or area where you are to be married. Aisle runners can be customized in the color and style that you choose. Monograms can be put on aisle runners, as can the names of the bride and groom. Using an aisle runner outside will give the event a more formal tone.

If you are having an autumn or Halloween wedding, use bales of hay for seats. This is certainly an affordable way to provide seating for your guests.

Renting chairs can be costly, so bring large pillows, quilts chairs and even couches from your home; use these for seating. If it is cool, get the fire pit going and light torches that can lead guests to the area where the ceremony is going to be performed.

Because the weather can be unpredictable, use flowers in your bouquets and other arrangements that can stand up to wind, sunshine and rain. Good choices include calla lilies, sunflowers and mums. Do not compete with the natural elements that surround your wedding venue. Work with them. Loose, flowing flower arrangements that are placed in crates, pails, mason jars, urns or wooden boxes may work better than more austere and formal floral designs.
