One fault of a canvas convertible top is it's susceptibility to becoming damaged from falling branches or other debris that might rip or cut the canvas. While replacing a convertible top can be expensive, you can repair small rips and tears yourself. You will first need to sew the rip or tear, then you can patch over the damage with a new piece of matching canvas. While the patch will remain visible, you can save hundreds or even thousands of dollars repairing the top yourself.
Instructions
- 1
Sew up the cut in the roof with a curved needle and thread or wire. Use a cross-stitch pattern to ensure it will be water-tight and secure.
2Apply masking tape onto the underside of the rip or tear, from the inside of the car, to stop any glue seeping into the car during the next step.
3Apply a canvas, general adhesive or craft glue over the stitching from the outside and allow it to dry according to the manufacturers guidelines.
4Cut out a section of matching replacement canvas in a similar shape to the cut or rip, using scissors.
5Remove the masking tape from inside the car.
6Sew the new canvas onto the roof over the stitching.
7Fill in the stitching holes with glue to ensure it is watertight.
8Tidy up your work by sanding away any excess dried glue and cutting away any loose fibers.
