How to Install a Sun Setter Shade

EasyShade SunSetter shades are outdoor roller shades made of vinyl mesh designed to block 80 percent of the sun while allowing in filtered light and air. According to the manufacturer, the shades also provide privacy and protection from strong winds. Homeowners install these mildew-resistant shades, which are available in lengths of 4 to 10 feet, on outdoor structures such as gazebos, porches, and pergolas. The shades extend up to 6-1/2 feet. Installation requires two people.

Instructions

Decide whether to install the shade on a vertical surface, such as a wall, or on the underside of a structure, such as a soffit or a wood beam on a gazebo. Place the shade in a location that best blocks low afternoon sun. Building designers report a 5 to 15 percent reduction in cooling energy consumption, not to mention increased comfort, when proper shading devices are installed.

Mark the location of the mounting brackets. The 4-, 6-, and 8-foot-long shades have two mounting brackets and the 10-foot shade has three. Install the two end brackets within 10 inches from each end of the shade. Install the middle bracket for the 10-foot shade in the middle of the two end brackets. With a pencil, mark the bracket's two hole locations and use a 1/8-inch drill bit to create holes about 1-1/2 inches deep.

Position the bracket on the wall or horizontal surface. For wall installation, the thicker edge of the bracket will be on the bottom. Face the thicker edge toward you when installing the bracket on a horizontal surface. Secure the bracket to the surface with two 1-1/2-inch screws provided in the kit.

Using the provided attachment screw, attach the crank loop, which is the shade's hand cranking mechanism, to the gear shaft.

Face the installed brackets and orient the shade so that the crank loop is on your right. With the aid of a helper, place the shade into the mounting brackets, inserting the top groove of the shade assembly into the part of the bracket that protrudes from the mounting surface. Keeping the shade assembly in the bracket, tighten the included set screw in the thicker edge of the mounting bracket until the bracket securely holds the shade.
