How to Build Vinyl Pergolas

Pergolas, like arbors and gazebos, add an element of style and functionality to gardens and other outdoor spaces. Although many are constructed from wood, vinyl pergolas are becoming more commonplace due to their durability and low maintenance. Vinyl pergolas can be built by scratch by skillful do-it-yourselfers. But more often they are built from pre-made kits, which offer pre-cut and pre-drilled pieces and construction instructions. These kits can be purchased at home improvement stores or online.

Instructions

Choose the location for your pergola. The location depends on the size of your pergola. Many pergolas, including those that are part of a kit, are 8 feet by x 8 feet. But you can find them bigger as well. Make sure the space you choose will accommodate the size of pergola you plan to construct.

Research pergola designs and select the size and style you like. You can find a variety of designs and kits online, in magazines and at home improvement stores. Order your kit online or purchase it from your local home improvement store.

Contact your community's planning and building department, if applicable. Obtain the necessary building permits to construct the pergola.

Stake out the pergola's perimeter. Ensure no utility lines are nearby where you want to dig or where near the top of the pergola will. Use a measuring tape and either cord or string to stake out the perimeter, then dig the four holes with a posthole digger.

Follow the instructions provided in the kit. Materials in the kit are pre-drilled and pre-cut, which makes the process much easier. With the help of friends, a vinyl pergola from a kit can be built in one day. After erecting your new structure, relax and enjoy your new outdoor living space!
