How Do I Make a Metal Frame Corn Crib Into a Gazebo?

If you already have an old metal-frame corn crib on your property, surely you've noticed how pleasant it can be to stand there under the shade and enjoy country life. A few alterations will make your corn crib into a full-fledged gazebo: a decorative part of your garden landscape. If you have to find and move in a metal corn crib to be your gazebo, the process will be more challenging, but equally rewarding.

Instructions

    1

Draw a detailed design of how your gazebo will fit into your current garden landscape. Pay special attention to the door, or major access point, to your gazebo, because you must consider how traffic will flow to and from the gazebo itself. If you will be adding a paved path to the gazebo, include it in your drawing. Also note the other plants and structures near the gazebo that could either enhance or interfere with your gazebo's design.

    2

Repair any existing hazards you can find on the gazebo. The most likely feature of the metal corn cob crib that may need repair is the metal roof. Either patch any holes with aluminum sheeting, or replace the entire roof with a classic wood framed roof and asphalt shingles. If your design doesn't need a waterproof roof, you may consider a pergola-style flat wooden roof. Other repairs include straightening bent wires or simply cleaning the inside of the crib to free it of weed residue.

    3

Cut an entrance (or entrances) into the corn crib to gain easy access to its inner space. Using bolt cutters, cut each individual wire strand of the metal corn crib until you have an opening the correct size, and in the correct location, as determined by your design. Be sure to cut the wire as close to the junction of its perpendicular wire as possible. Then grind down the remaining sharp point of the wire with the metal grinder to prevent injuries. Re-attach a decorative door in the opening, if desired.

Suitable plants for decorating the outside of your corn crib gazebo include ivy, clematis, morning glory, or climbing roses.

Plant decorative plants around the gazebo to close off and soften its structure, and to provide shade during summer months. Climbing plants will be best for this purpose, although of course you can include elaborate flower beds around the outside of the gazebo, if desired. Avoid plants with thorns (like climbing roses), if people are going to be sitting near the walls of the gazebo, and instead use softer plants like ivy or clematis, or whatever is suited to your growing zone. You may also decorate the metal frame of your corn crib gazebo with strings of white lights to allow you to enjoy the space well into the evening.

    5

Build or install benches and other furniture inside the gazebo. Buying a pre-made set of outdoor furniture and placing it inside the gazebo will be the easiest way to instantly start enjoying your new outdoor space, but if you are willing, building wooden benches to line the inside of the corn crib gazebo will create a more permanent, useful structure.
