Do it Yourself Spa Enclosure

Enclosing your spa gives you more privacy than you have when the spa is simply set out on a deck or patio. Elaborate, ready-made gazebos are available from home improvement stores. A simple spa enclosure that creates a private retreat without breaking the bank can be built in a weekend with a couple of tools and materials that are available at a home improvement store. Use these steps as a starting point for your spa enclosure design.

Instructions

Build a stable surface for your spa. Pour a concrete pad by first excavating a four-inch-deep area the size and shape you want your patio to be. Lay one inch of pea gravel in the bottom of the excavation and then pour concrete over it. Level the concrete by dragging a board across the surface. Let the concrete cure for a day.

Dig postholes 3 feet 10 inches apart around the concrete pad. This is where the walls of your enclosure will be built, so dig the holes in straight lines if you've poured a square or rectangular pad. For a round pad, dig the holes about a foot away from the edge of the pad. Leave a space without a posthole for an entryway into the spa enclosure.

Pour concrete in the postholes and set one 2x4 in the concrete in each hole. Use a level to make sure the lumber is straight and then let the concrete cure overnight. Face the flat side of the 2x4 toward the concrete pad.

Use -inch deck screws to attach the lattice to the 2x4s. Put a screw at the top and bottom of each piece of lattice where it meets the 2x4 and then space three more screws along the sides of lattice.

Continue to attach lattice to the 2x4s, creating an enclosure for your spa. Remember to leave the space for the entryway open.

Create a cover for the spa enclosure by making a shade sail. Cut a piece of canvas the size of your spa enclosure and attach grommets on the corners (for a square or rectangle) or space evenly about two feet apart (for a round enclosure). Attach screw hooks to the 2x4s to match the spacing of the grommets and slide the grommets over the screw hooks.

Add lighting, an outdoor bench with a lift top for storage and hooks for robes and towels. Train vines to grow up the lattice and plant insect repelling plants like lavender and marigolds around the outside.
