How to Miter a Gazebo Roof Bird Feeder

Gazebo bird feeders are both classic and stylish. Like the structures theyre named after, gazebo bird feeders are distinguished by pointed, carousel style roofs. Because the roofs are made out of four to eight triangular segments, mitering is required to ensure that the pieces fit together properly. Once youve decided how many sides you want your bird feeder to have, you can miter your roof pieces to match the number of sides for a clean, attractive look.

Instructions

    1

Determine the length of wood you will need to create the sides for your bird feeder. For example, if you were going to create an 8-inch tall bird feeder with four sides, you would want a 1/4-inch thick plywood or 1-by-4 pine board measuring 26-inches long and 5-3/4-inches wide to create a mitered carousel roof for that size bird feeder.

    2

Place the roof stock wood on a miter gauge and clamp it down to the mitering table. Turn the gauge counterclockwise. Run the cutting blade across and all the way through one end of the wood at a 45 degree angle.

    3

Disengage the cutting blade and move it back to its starting position. Flip the wood board over. Measure the length you need (such as eight inches in this example).

    4

Line up the cut piece of wood with the remaining stock and clamp both down to the mitering table. Use the cut piece as a guide to ensure you cut the same 45 degree angle on the next segment of stock. Run the cutting blade all the way through the board.

    5

Flip the board over and cut your remaining sides in the same fashion. Continue cutting until you have all the pieces you need for your mitered bird feeder roof.

    6

Fit and glue roof pieces together with wood glue. Let the pieces dry completely before attaching them as a unit to the sides.
