Ideas for Building a Pool Deck

A pool in the backyard is often an enhancement to a house in itself, but adding a deck to the pool not only adds to the architectural design of the yard, it also adds to the look and value of the home. There are many ways that you can incorporate a pool deck into the backyard, and whether you want to add it for the appeal and landscaping or the function, being creative with a deck allows you to customize your yard.

An elevated pool deck works well with either an in-ground or an above-ground pool; simply adjust the height of the deck based on the elevation of the pool. An elevated pool deck adds a finished look to an above-ground pool and allows you to have more standing space on the deck than the typical stair ladder that accompanies most above-ground pools. For in-ground pools, a slightly elevated deck gives you a spot to add lounge chairs if you do not have a cement area surrounding the pool.

Create a resort-like backyard by building a traditional deck around only one length of the pool. This style deck is ideal for sunbathing since you can lay back and enjoy the pool and sun, and even add furniture such as recliners and a gazebo. A side deck would be most suitable for a rectangular pool, since it is simple in shape and can be added to the pool as an easy weekend project. Some would not like the side deck idea, simply because it may throw the yard off balance due to having a deck on only one side.

If you like the architectural look of a deck, think about a contoured style. This pool deck idea is best suited for a round or oblong-type pool, because the design of the deck would mimic the shape of the pool. Contoured decking would also help you to cover unattractive portions of the backyard, especially around the pool, since you could add decking out from the pool as an architectural feature. Use the deck to cover typical poured concrete slabs for an easy yard transformation.
