How to Make a Canopy for a Wedding Ceremony

At a traditional Jewish wedding ceremony, the bride and groom are married beneath a wedding canopy, called a chuppah. This tradition has become prominent outside of the Jewish tradition as well. Numerous couples exchange vows beneath a small canopy which usually covers the bride, groom, and officiant. You don't need to buy an expensive wedding canopy. You can make your own wedding canopy with a few materials.

Instructions

Erect the portable gazebo and remove its cover, leaving only the bare frame standing.

Cut the white fabric to the same shape as the cover using the portable gazebo cover as a guide. This can be done by cutting the portable gazebo cover into large sections, pinning them onto the fabric, and then cutting around the cover so that the fabric beneath is the same size. Sew the pieces of white fabric together (again using the portable gazebo cover as a guide) with white thread.

Place the white fabric cover over the portable gazebo frame. The cover will probably hang slightly loose. This will give it a romantic, draped look.

Cut four pieces of white fabric that are the same length as the gazebo frame leg, using the left-over white fabric. Wrap each strip of fabric around one frame leg to make sure that it is wide enough to cover the leg. Sew the ends together (making a long sleeve) with white thread.

Slip the four sleeves onto the four legs of the gazebo frame and use the Velcro strips to fasten the sleeves to the inside of the gazebo cover.

Tie the eight white satin sashes to the portable gazebo frame to hold the cover in place. Tie two sashes to each of the four gazebo frame posts: one in the middle and one at the top.

Add embellishments to the canopy if you wish. Hang small, twinkly lights inside or hang pieces of colored ribbon from the top.
