How to Make a 10x10 Canvas Tent Top

Canvas is a time-honored camping material. Entire generations of children have grown up knowing the smell of wet canvas. With the modern materials available, fewer and fewer tents are made from canvas, but for those with the desire to make their own camping equipment and reuse material, canvas is a perfectly suitable material to make many different pieces of camping equipment, especially tents. Constructing a basic tent top out of canvas is one of the most fundamental projects for the camper interested in homemade camping equipment.

Instructions

Fold the edge of the canvas over so that there is an overlap of 1/2 inch. Using the sewing machine, sew this hem with a double stitch. Use a sewing machine needle that is strong enough to go through heavy canvas, but do not use thread that is too thick or the seam will not be waterproof.

Attach grommets to each of the four corners of the canvas, about one inch in from the edge. Most grommets must be hammered in place. Attach grommets to the center of each edge of the canvas as well, and attach extra grommets equally spaced around the perimeter of the canvas as desired. These grommets will be useful for tying down the tent in high-wind situations.

Cut the nylon strap into 6-inch lengths. Fold each strap in half, and place one strap on each corner of the canvas---the loops should hang off the end of the tarp while the straight ends overlap on the canvas. Sew each strap in place using a double line of stitching over the straight ends. These loops will hold the tent stakes. Attach additional loops to the center of each side of the canvas.

Decide how you will stand the tent up. The easiest option is to throw it over a rope that is strung between two trees and stake down the ends. This will give you a classic, triangular canvas tent with open ends.

Attach mosquito netting to the open sides of your tent, either by sewing it in place using the sewing machine, or by attaching velcro to the mosquito netting and to the sides of the tent where the mosquito netting is needed.
