How to Build a Two Tier Gazebo

A gazebo adds appeal and utility to any outdoor space. Building this basic, yet attractive, structure is fun and fairly easy. To add a level of difficulty and create a different appearance for your gazebo, build a second tier. Building a two-tier gazebo is no more difficult than constructing a standard gazebo; the process just has an additional step, but it totally changes the look of the finished structure.

Your gazebo can have as many corners as you want.

Dig holes, 24 inches deep, with a shovel where you want the corners of the gazebo to be. Put a 1- to 2-inch layer of concrete in the bottom of the hole, then place your post on top of the concrete. Fill the hole with concrete around the post. Use a level to make sure that the post is level in the concreted hole. Measure the desired distance inside and dig four 18-inch-deep holes for the corners of the second tier. Repeat the concrete and posting procedure for the second tier.

Drill and screw joist hangers on the exterior edge of the posts. Measure and cut 2-by-6 boards and place them in the joist hangers. Drill and screw them in place. This will form the perimeter of the gazebo; the height of the interior tier should be 6 to 12 inches higher than the exterior tier. Also hang another set of 2-by-6 boards at the same height as the exterior perimeter below the top perimeter of the internal, second tier.

Drill and attach joist hangers to the inside of the perimeter boards of both tiers every 18 inches. On the lower 2-by-6 boards, attach the joist hangers to the exterior. Measure, cut and place 2-by-6 boards into the joist hangers. Make sure the boards are level, then drill and screw them into place. These pieces will form your floor joists.

Measure, cut, drill and screw the 1-by-6 floor boards running at the opposite direction of the floor joists. If there is a section where you have to place two boards to cover the length, be sure that the joint is on a joist and not over a gap. Stagger these joints to ensure stability. Attach each board with at least 1/8 inch in between, about the width of a screw, to allow for expansion and contraction of the wood.

Measure, cut and attach 2-by-6 boards to the exterior of the tops of the posts. Attach joist hangers and place the measured and cut 2-by-6 boards in between the tops of the posts for the two tiers. Place the hangers at an interval of no more than 24 inches. Measure, cut and attach pieces to go between the corners. The different depth of the footer holes in which the posts are concreted should provide for a 6-inch rise in the roof line between tiers.

Strong joists provide a stable and dry roof.

Screw a 2-by-4 board into the interior of the top boards on the second tier. Measure cut and attach 2-by-6 boards to the interior of the second tier so that the 2-by-4 forms a footer board and the roof joists rise to meet in the center of the gazebo. The exact measurements and angles will depend on your desired look. You can use a block in the center to make attaching the roof joists easier.

Measure and cut 1-by-6 boards and attach them to the roof joists. You can also use plywood for this step. Cover with the roofing material of your choice to keep a dry and sealed roof.
