How to Build an Octagon Dollhouse

Cardboard shoeboxes are excellent building materials for an octagon dollhouse. For maximum construction strength, look for shoeboxes that are the same size. The octagon shape of the structure delivers four spacious dollhouse rooms that can be decorated in a variety of styles, and a central atrium that can hold miniature trees, flowers and patio furniture. Garden and decorating magazines can provide creative inspiration for a young interior designer, who can tailor her dollhouse to her own style.

Instructions

Position the empty shoeboxes on their short sides in a cross formation, with the shoebox openings facing outward north, south, east and west and an empty square in the center of the shoeboxes.

Tape the shoeboxes together securely along their back outer edges with the masking tape, using strips of tape across the backs of the shoeboxes.

Measure the width and height of the empty areas between the boxes. Cut four rectangular pieces of poster board to the measurements. Cut small squares for windows in the pieces of poster board. Place doll furniture in the small areas. Tape the pieces of poster board to the shoeboxes edges to create walls between the four rooms

Lay a piece of poster board on the top of the dollhouse structure. Cut a piece of poster board to fit the eight-sided shape. Cut squares in the center of the roof for atrium skylights and tape the roof to the shoeboxes.

Paint the entire outside dollhouse with the poster paint. Each of the four large rooms, which are the open areas of the shoeboxes, can be painted. Paint trees and flowers on the flat poster board sections between the rooms.

Decorate the dollhouse rooms with dollhouse furniture and decorate the atrium with miniature trees, flowers and patio furniture.
